Math Trick: Multiplying by using lines.
I found this video online and I found it to be interesting. I would like to know what you think of it and how you might use it for multiplication. Do you think that it would be an alternative way to teach multiplying or not. I would like your thoughts on this topic.
Multiplying using Lines
I think that its extremely interesting how this works. Whoever discovered this is amazing. However I think it's kind kf confusing. But I also think that if kids are taught to multiply this way it would make more sense to them. I'm going to stick with the old way of multiplying though!
ReplyDeleteI really like this method. It was very interesting to watch how easily it was to multiply big numbers with just lines and grouping. If kids are taught this way from when they start learning how to multiply I think it will be easier for them to understand. It is a little harder to understand since i was taught in a different way than this, but i think if you show the kids this method first it will be much easier for them than the way i was taught. I really liked this method and might consider using it if it is necessary.
ReplyDeleteThis is a pretty cool trick. Like Ryley said, it's very confusing. Teaching this to kids who are just learning multiplication isn't a good idea. That would make them not know how to really multiply. The kids would just be drawing a bunch of lines and not really know the meaning of it. They could also get tired of drawing lines all the time. Also, someone who writes sloppy and tries to do it fast might mess it all up and get the wrong answer. I will definitely stay with the old way to multiply. I already know how to multiply the old way, and doing the trick to multiply for variables is not convenient because you have to use two colors.
ReplyDeleteThis method would definitely help students who have a difficult time learning multiplication the way we did. It's a new way to learn how to multiple bigger numbers. I do agree with Morgan that a person with sloppy handwriting, as many students do at the age they would be learning multiplication, it would be hard for them to make out what they had written down. Although this method could be useful, I like the old method we learned in elementary school.
ReplyDeleteThis method is very interesting and could be very helpful with multiplying bigger numbers together. It is a very different way of approaching multiplication, but it definitely does work. Personally I like the method that I was taught better, but I may have to try using it for more complex multiplication problems. I definitely think they should keep teaching the original way of multiplying, but maybe teach kids this way once they get to be in junior high because it probably would be confusing for younger kids just learning to multiply.
ReplyDeleteMultiplying using lines seems like an interesting and creative way to multiply numbers. It could be viewed as confusing because the location of lines could easily be switched and crowded when there are numbers being multiplied that are larger than 2 digits. I could see the benefit for students who have problems multiplying larger numbers together, but the confusion of the process would still be present with this method. I think that this method takes away from the student truly understanding how to multiply. As they advance in mathematics, they could become lost and really confused. Even considering the benefit it would be to some students, I believe that the method I learned in elementary school is more beneficial and useful.
ReplyDeleteI personally found it very interesting. I would have never been able to of figured out how to do that. I personally dont like multipling that way. I prefer multipling the way I was taught in school. But I guess if you were taught that way from the beginning that it would be easier. I feel it could be very beneficial and eaier for student that think more abstractly.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a very interesting method. I have never seen or heard of this way of multiplying until I saw this video. I don't like it as much as the way I was taught growing up, but if I grew up using this then I might like it more. I think this would be hard for me because I don't have very good handwriting and I would get the lines messed up and then get the problem wrong.
ReplyDeleteMultiplying this way is actually pretty interesting. I think that if you were taught to multiply this way from the very beginning it would be very beneficial. If it were taught along with the method that we were taught, I think it would help the kids who may not fully understand multiplying. I would still probably use the original method that I was taught simply because I would get too caught up in all the lines and mess up the method somewhere.
ReplyDeleteThis way of multiplication in really interesting because it is something that no one would think of, and it is super easy to remember. Teaching this at a young age may help children learn how to multiply more efficiently and make it easier for someone who does not understand. The rules to it are easy to learn and that is a plus as well.
ReplyDeleteThis video blew my mind! I really want to know how he came to figure out this method. It is a very strange way of multiplying. I think it is cool, but I don’t think that kids should depend on this as their way of multiplying. It is a nice thing to help kids find the answer to a multiplication problem, but it does not teach the fundamentals and takes away from the true understanding of the process. Even though this method is very creative, it is also confusing. Children prefer different ways of learning, so some kids would pick this up and others wouldn’t so much. I do not think this should be taught by default, though. It should be a matter of preference and not forced upon anyone.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Gabby. I think it is a very neat and inventive way of teaching multiplication; however, I think the traditional multiplication method is the best way to introduce students to the operation. I believe this method may be like a wild card in the fact that it could help a student understand the multiplication concept better or it could complicate the concept for the student. I know I would get lost in all the lines and confuse myself.
