As winter approaches, I would like you to give me your opinion on the fact that we must make-up all days missed.  I would like you to tell me if you believe that making up school has a direct impact on your education.  I would like you to give me ideas that you might use to replace the make-up days.  Please elaborate on all your ideas.
Thanks,
Mr. Oliger

  1. We cannot control the weather. During the winter, we never know when it may snow. The snow plows work as hard as they can to clear the roads to make it safer to drive on, but country roads are the last to be cleared for traffic. Busses rely on many country roads to pick up kids for school. The overall goal is to safely transport kids to and from school, and when the snow challenges that, there are too many lives at risk to gamble with. Schools should not be accountable for every missed day, for schools are held accountable for the student’s lives. I believe that there should be a limit to how many days a school can miss, though, because it helps keep schools reasonably considering their options and making the right decision instead of opting out of a school day. I believe that a school should be given 10 non-accountable missed days due to bad winter weather. If a school goes over that limit, then they will have to make those days up. I believe there should also be a limit to where if the conditions become so bad that the state completely waives the school day off and it doesn’t count towards their ten days.

  2. In my opinion, making-up all days missed because of snow days has no impact on our education. Missing a day or two and not making them up in the winter because of safety conditions would not have a negative effect. I think that school systems should be given an allowed amount of days to miss school. Missing a couple days out of 180 isn't going to disrupt our over all learning for the year. Last year we had two days waived by the state. Did that seem to have a negative impact on our education? No, we managed just fine. If we were not to make-up missed snow days I believe our education system would still suite just fine.

  3. In my opinion I believe that missing school days due to unsafe weather should not have to be made up to a certain extent. There should be an agreed upon number of days that a school system can miss without having to make them up. Missing some days would not have a major impact on the student body's education. The only negativity would be that teachers have a schedule. They have plans and lessons for the year that are designed to prepare students for all of the tests required of them to take and with a hindered time frame to give these lessons, both students and teachers may be put under more pressure and stress. So the idea of make up days is I feel, very beneficial to a certain degree but the set in stone 180 days I believe is slightly ridiculous to the point of comicalness. As in the other aspects of life though, society has been persistent in giving power to certain "magic numbers" such as 16 and 6 months, 18, and 21. How surprising is it then that this to is forsaken to have any leeway? That's society. And a reason why I hate its seemingly growing unrelenting static restrictions.

  4. I believe that making up school days does not have a direct impact on my education. Quite frankly, I don't enjoy making up for school cancellations during my spring and summer breaks, as well as several isolated holidays. I do not believe the loss of the two school days last year that were waived by the state largely impaired my educational experiences, so why not give schools a few extra days to miss as necessary? Teachers and students are provided with a regulated quantity of sick days, right? Why not give school corporations a number of these "sick days" as well?

  6. I do not believe making up days has a major impact on our education. Missing a few days is nothing to worry about. However, if the amount of days missed exceeds a certain number then it becomes a bigger problem. But I think that rather than adding on days to end of the year or taking away vacation days we should just add on small amounts of time to the end of each school day until we have made up the time we have missed. This is a more convienent option and would be better for everyone.

  7. Making up missed school days, in my opinion, has no impact whatsoever on our education. Since we make these days up solely to please the state of Indiana, they obviously don't have a major impact on our education. When we're forced to miss days of spring and summer break, none of our minds are even on the schoolwork we're doing. I don't see it as fair. Like Paige said above, the state waived two of our missed days last year. So, can it really have a big impact? I don't feel that they days missed should be replaced with anything; I think that these days should just be looked over and seen as something that no one can control. This is Indiana; the weather is beyond unpredictable.

  8. Personally, I don't think that we should have to make up every day we miss. It wouldn't affect the education of the students. The students cannot control the weather and missing school. If we miss a lot of days of school, then we may have to make some of them up. It just depends on how many days you miss.

  9. I do not feel like missing a few days of school during the winter and not making them up is a big deal. I do not think it hurts your education if you aren't there for a few days. I think if you miss a week or more that you should take a couple days out of spring break to make up the days you missed. Weather in Indiana is very uncontrollable. It changes all the time and you never know what's going to happen. I don't think it hurts our education if we miss a few days during the winter and don't make them up.

  10. I do think that making up missed days because of the weather is a good thing. If we missed a day the teacher will now feel rushed because they have to teach a certain amount of things in a year because it is required by the state. So if the teacher feels rushed the students will feel rushed as well. But instead of adding on days on the end of the year, we could do what New Castle did and just stay an extra hour after school for an certain amount of days until we are all caught up.

  11. I believe that making up missed days due to winter weather doesn't have a direct impact on my education. We are forced to attend school for 180 days a school year, and that is plenty of days of learning. Missing a few days in the winter because of poor weather shouldn't be a big issue that schools and the board of education worries about. Since we are forced to come to school for so many days a year, students shouldn't be forced to make up those days of school. Weather, especially in Indiana, can't be prevented or controlled. We don't need to be required to make up days that were missed due to something we can't control. It is similar to being sick. You can't control when you come down with a cold or feel poorly one day. Schools don't make students who miss school for an illness make up those days missed, so they shouldn't force students to make up days missed for school. The only exception to this would be an excessive amount of days missed because of winter weather, just like days missed for illnesses or appointments. Students are penalized for missing 6 days or more in one class, and I think that can be applied to snow days. After 10 snow days, the school should require its students to make-up the additional days missed. In conclusion, missing days because of the weather don't need to be made up if it's only a few days.

  12. I dint think missing some school would have a direct impact on us. We can't control the weather, so why should we make up the school day when we couldn't help but to miss. We go to school enough days to where we can miss some here and there. I could understand of we missed 2 weeks or longer, then we might need to start making some days up, but if it's only a few its not that big of a deal.

  13. I do not believe that making up all days of school that we miss have a direct impact on my education. My opinion is that schools should have so many days that we are allowed to miss because of the weather and not have to make up. Nobody can control the weather so why should we have to take our summer away because of it. When we make up days of school at the end of the year it turns into days of doing nothing which means that it is worthless to even be at school. I suggest that schools give 5 days of free snow days that we don't have to make up and any more than that we would have to make up on built in snow days like Martin Luther Day.

  14. If we only miss a couple days of school, I do not think that it has much of an impact on our education. If we were to miss a several consecutive days, I think that it would make a difference because we would be so behind in what we need to know. To make them up, we should just come to school on the small holidays that we miss school for.
